Focus on ... Mercedes enginesSeventy-nine percent of the Monza lap is spent at full throttle with top speeds nudging 360km/h (224mph) at the end of its long pit straight. A typical race lasts less than an hour and 20 minutes and a 5.8km qualifying lap is complete in just 1:23s. Its nicknamed the Temple of Speed for a reason. At such extremes even the smallest advantage can count for a lot and ever since his multiple engine changes at the Belgian Grand Prix, Hamilton has gained a minor, but not insignificant, advantage over teammate Nico Rosberg. All that engine stockpiling at Spa-Francorchamps gave Hamilton three power units to complete nine races (including Spa itself) -- meaning each power unit has to complete three races. Rosberg, meanwhile, took his fourth power unit of the season in Spa, leaving him one fresh power unit before he starts incurring penalties of his own. Therefore, he had two power units to complete the same nine race period -- meaning each power unit has to complete 4.5 races. The situation may be slightly more complex if Rosberg subs in old power units during free practice to save the life on his race engines and an expected upgrade at Suzuka gives his fifth engine the edge over Hamiltons pool of three. In the meantime, however, it still represents a minor advantage for Hamilton in the title race, and he knows it.I can definitely push them more and there is a certain amount of life and limits that you are given during a race weekend and I never even get close to them [so far this season], Hamilton said of his power units. When I had the five engines, I was always saving, saving, hoping to take them further, but now I am going to use my allowance and I can do that at all the races now.It may be a small advantage, but it is an advantage nonetheless, especially on a track where the power units are already operating at extremes. No wonder Hamilton was so ecstatic with his podium at Spa.In need of a podiumFerrari has not scored a podium since the Austrian Grand Prix and in that time Ferrari has lost second place in the constructors to Red Bull. Spa should have represented an opportunity, especially with Hamilton starting from the back of the grid, but a collision between its two drivers at Turn 1 put both cars on a mission of damage limitation. Monza should suit the Ferrari - Kimi Raikkonen qualified on the front row last year and Sebastian Vettel finished second - but the pressure to perform is huge and how the team reacts will say a lot about its current mindset. In need of pointsDaniil Kvyats F1 career is on the ropes as he attempts to prove his talent in a car that appears to be less competitive by the round. Spa and Monza were never going to suit the Toro Rosso and its year-old Ferrari engine, but its strength in high- and medium-speed also went missing at the Belgian Grand Prix. The dip in form could not have come at a worse time for Kvyat as Red Bull junior Pierre Gasly has finally started stringing together the results he needed to take a comfortable lead in GP2. It would be a shame to see the career of a driver of Kvyats talent career fizzle out over the remaining rounds, but unless he starts performing miracles soon he is unlikely to remain in F1 next year.ESPN predictionIn reality this is a Mercedes track, but F1 often has tendency to surprise when you least expect it. For that reason, we are backing Sebastian Vettel to get the speed, luck and whatever else is needed to win in front of the Tifosi. Just dont ask us how it happens...WeatherIt looks like it should be a sunny weekend in Monza, but there is a chance of rain spicing up the show on Sunday. Friday should have sunny conditions with cumulus cloud and showers developing to the mountains north of Monza, but only light winds and temperatures ranging from 29 to 31 degrees down in the park itself. Sunny and dry conditions are forecast for Saturday with some cloud developing into the afternoon and maximum daytime temperatures of around 31 degrees. Sunday will see higher amounts convective cloud and hence an increased risk of rain, especially in the afternoon.BettingLewis Hamilton is the favourite to win on Sunday at 8/13, with Nico Rosberg 9/4. Both Red Bull drivers have odds 12/1, but if you fancy following ESPNs outlandish prediction of a Sebastian Vettel victory you can get odds of 16/1. Up the ante with a bet on Kimi Raikkonen and youll be rewarded with odds of 28/1. Back on planet earth, the smarter money is on Valtteri Bottas to score a podium in the Williams at 25/1 or Felipe Massa at 50/1.A lap with Carlos SainzAs you go down into Turn 1 you can see, hear and smell them - they are all doing barbecues in this area of the track and are all so passionate! Getting to the first chicane is one of the best feelings, arriving at nearly 350kph, surrounded by these incredible fans... Its fantastic! Obviously, its a very tough couple of corners, always tight during the first lap of the race and there are very frequently a few tangles there. You then reach another 330kph top speed section, before entering another chicane, Turns 4 and 5. Here its very important to jump over the kerbs. We then go into what is one of my favourite parts of this circuit, the two Lesmos. These corners have a lot of banking, so it allows you to carry a lot of speed into them. I have to say that lap by lap you go quicker each time through these corners just because of gaining more and more confidence.Just before arriving to Turn 8 you reach another high speed of around 340kph, and this just shows that its a really fast track, its incredible. Another of my favourite chicanes is Turns 8, 9 and 10, taken in fourth gear and much faster than what it could seem... Its important to ride the kerbs here as well. After this theres a very long and fast straight, before arriving to a Turn 11, a corner that has lost a lot of its beauty - the run off area used to be gravel and it was so much nicer back then! Now its tarmac and everyone can go fast through the Parabolica. Its a shame that they decided to do this.TyresAvailable compounds: Medium, soft, super-softWhile average speeds are high, cornering speeds are reasonably low, minimising tyre wear. This means that some teams could aim for a one-stop strategy.Heavy longitudinal forces act on tyres, especially under braking and traction in the two chicanes. The drivers tend to hit the famous kerbs at Monza hard, which further tests the tyre structure.Parabolica and Curva Grande are particularly challenging, as they are long corners putting plenty of energy through the tyres.Low downforce means braking and acceleration is tricky: drivers must try to avoid wheelspin. FORT WORTH, Texas -- When TCU last won an NCAA Tournament game in 1987, Jamie Dixon was a senior guard for the then-Southwest Conference champion Horned Frogs.Dixon is now back at his alma mater as head coach, focused on the future and not the lack of any consistent success in the three decades since he played. Were starting over. I cant do anything about the last 30 years. I cant do anything about the last four in the Big 12, Dixon said. And were a new program for so many reasons, and I think its just the best way for us to look at it.The Frogs have won only eight conference games in four seasons since joining the Big 12. They are picked to finish last again in the league that had the highest overall RPI the past three seasons.Still, Dixon envisions the TCU program becoming similar to what he had while leading Pittsburgh to 11 NCAA Tournaments the past 13 seasons.I think we have everything in place here to do that, and thats where getting to the tournament is expected and anything less is not a good year, he said. I know theres no history to base that upon, but weve got to believe, weve got to have blind faith.TCU is going into its first full season in its completely redone arena, which was gutted but is still under the same roof that was there when Dixon was part of two SWC titles as a player. After replacing the fired Trent Johnson in late March, Dixon was able to add some impact freshmen -- point guard Jaylen Fisher, guard Desmond Bane and forward Kouat Noi -- and inherited a roster with four seniors that the new coach is relying on to be leaders. Our final chance, said guard Michael Williams, one of the TCU seniors. Weve got a new coach, got a new team, and looking to make big things happen. Some thinngs to watch for with the Horned Frogs this season:ON POINTDixons first signee was Fisher, who had been committed to UNLV before fired coach Dave Rice was replaced in April.dddddddddddd. Former UNLV assistant Ryan Miller, who had recruited Fisher, is now on Dixons staff at TCU. Jaylens very good. Hes what we needed, Dixon said. A point, great way to start a program with your first sign. ... He might be as good a point guard as there was last year, as far as a true point guard.RICH RETURNKenrich Williams, a 6-foot-7 guard, averaged 8.6 points and a team-leading 6.7 rebounds a game as a sophomore in 2014-15. But he missed last season after microfracture knee surgery. Williams is back and healthy after the redshirt year.SENIOR SHEPHARDBefore Fisher, the highest-rated recruit ever to sign with TCU was 6-11 forward Karviar Shepherd. After averaging 9.1 points and 6.8 rebounds as a freshman, Shepherds numbers dropped to 6.1 points and 5.7 rebounds as a sophomore, and he had 7.1 points and 5.2 rebounds a game last season.OPPOSITE PATHSDixon won 328 games in his 13 seasons with Pitt. Under its last three head coaches the past 14 seasons -- the late Neil Dougherty, Jim Christian and Johnson -- TCU won only 181 games and had only three winning records.NOT GETTING EASIERDixon went from the Big East to ACC with Pittsburgh, and now is in the Big 12. I seem to have gone from the best conference, to the best conference to the best conference, he said. Its fun, its exciting and its great that TCU is a part of that. Thats where it should be, and where it once was in the Southwest Conference. ' ' '
